A home care agency and a home health agency differ primarily in the type of services they provide. A home care agency offers non-medical assistance to individuals who need help with daily living activities such as personal care, companionship, light housekeeping, and meal preparation. These agencies typically employ caregivers who are not licensed medical professionals.
On the other hand, a home health agency provides medical care and therapeutic services, often under the direction of a physician. Services may include nursing care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other medical treatments, and these agencies employ licensed healthcare professionals like registered nurses, physical therapists, and speech therapists. Essentially, home care agencies focus on supporting daily activities, while home health agencies offer medical treatment and rehabilitation at home.

Absolutely! We love to hire friends and family to provide the most compassionate and nurturing care to our clients. We are required to follow state guidelines with regards to hiring and we must also follow any insurance payer requirements. Some clients even work with more than one family member to ensure all of their caregiving needs are met.
The VA CCN may require the caregiver assigned to a client to hold a valid Indiana Home Health Aide certification. If that's the case for a particular client, then the family member would have to already possess a HHA certification or be willing to obtain the certification. Careworthy does have a HHA training program and can help your family member obtain the required credential.
If a client doesn't have their own caregiver this is fine. Veteran Care Companions has a team of professional, competent caregivers to assist our clients at every age and stage.

At Veteran Care Companions, we help our clients get housed by partnering with local VA agencies with existing housing programs and funding sources. However, as long as the veteran has safe interim, temporary housing, we can provide in home-caregiving. This includes if the veteran is staying at a motel, extended stay hotel, boarding home or a family member's home. We can not provide care in a homeless shelter, in an outside encampment or if the client is living in his vehicle.

We can typically start caregiving within 1-2 weeks. However, if you need to apply for pension benefits, the process may take a little longer while we collect your documents to confirm your eligibility.

We provide non-medical caregiving services. Therefore, our caregivers are unable to assist with medical tasks. However, they can support you as you administer your own at-home dialysis treatment. Also, due to state and federal regulation, our caregivers are also unable to administer insulin or other medications. However, they can provide medication reminders and provide monitoring as you self-administer.

Surviving spouses are not eligible for care through the VA's Community Care Network. However, they may qualify for support through the Veterans Aid and Attendance program.
To qualify for surviving spouse benefits through the Veterans Aid and Attendance program, the individual must meet certain criteria. First, the surviving spouse must have been married to a veteran who either was honorably discharged after at least 90 days of active duty, with at least one day of service during wartime, or the veteran must have passed away due to a service-related injury or condition. Additionally, the surviving spouse must not have remarried after the veteran’s death (unless remarriage occurred after the age of 55). The surviving spouse must also demonstrate a need for help with daily living activities, such as assistance with bathing, dressing, or mobility, or be bedridden, living in a nursing home, or visually impaired. Financial eligibility is also considered, as the surviving spouse's income and assets must fall within the limits set by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). If all these requirements are met, the surviving spouse can receive financial assistance to cover caregiving costs or other health-related services under the Aid and Attendance benefit.

Veterans have the right to direct their care and choose any approved and credentialed care provider that is part of the VA Community Care Network. If you would like to switch to our agency, simply contact your VA Care Coordinator and let him or her know and they can start the process to move your caregiving services. If you need assistance, please contact our office.

You do not have to retire from the military to qualify for caregiving services.
To obtain community care through the VA's Community Care Network, you will have to meet certain criteria. Your doctor, social worker and the CCN nurse will review your health status and needs and make a determination on your eligibility.
Through the Veterans Aid and Attendance Pension Benefit. This benefit is available to eligible veterans and surviving spouses who require assistance with daily living activities, regardless of whether they served in a retired capacity. The Aid and Attendance benefit is designed to help veterans who need help with basic tasks such as dressing, bathing, or eating, or who are confined to their home due to a disability. Veterans who served on active duty for at least 90 days, including one day during wartime, may be eligible for this benefit, as long as they meet the financial and medical criteria. The benefit can provide financial assistance to cover the costs of in-home care, nursing home care, or assisted living services.

Yes. Eligible veterans had to have served at least one day during war time. However, this could have been in any capacity including clerical, cooking, etc. You also could have been stateside during the war and still qualified. You did not have to be deployed.
